Silver Lake

East Side · Los Angeles, CA

Hills, reservoir, modernist pedigree, and the steadiest creative pulse on the East Side.

Silver Lake earned its reputation honestly. From the Schindler and Neutra houses on the hills above the reservoir, to the design-forward shops along Sunset Junction, to the music venues that shaped American indie rock in the 2000s — this is a neighborhood where creative people have been making things, and quietly raising families, for a long time.

The defining geography is the reservoir itself: a 2.2-mile loop ringed by some of the most architecturally significant homes in Los Angeles. Walk the path on a Sunday morning and you'll see the same mix of architects, musicians, designers, and chefs that's defined the neighborhood for thirty years.

The housing stock is layered — Spanish bungalows, modernist boxes, hillside contemporaries, and a strong stock of carefully restored 1920s craftsmen. Prices have moved a great deal, but Silver Lake still attracts buyers who care about design and about being part of a real, walkable, creatively dense neighborhood.

What I love about Silver Lake.

Silver Lake

The reservoir

The 2.2-mile loop is the social center of the neighborhood. Joggers, dogs, strollers, and design-pilgrimage tourists all share the path.

Sunset Junction

Where Sunset and Santa Monica meet — bookshops, restaurants, the Cha Cha Lounge, Intelligentsia, and a steady evolution of new openings. Walkable density that's rare on the East Side.

The architecture

Schindler, Neutra, Lautner, Lloyd Wright — Silver Lake holds one of the densest concentrations of modernist landmark homes in the country. Many are still privately owned and lovingly maintained.

The schools

Ivanhoe Elementary is a magnet for families on the east side of the neighborhood; Micheltorena charter has built a strong reputation on the west. The Silver Lake / Echo Park school conversation is a real one buyers should have early.
